"Holy Togliatti!
I actually haven’t heard much new from the motor city, so the new OVOD LP released by Teenage Waste Records (Izhevsk), is a much welcome surprise. Lyova, Ilya, Misha, and Vano have put together an impressive 7-song record that touches on all the expected punk clichés but also delivers original rifts and melodies that make them worthy of carrying the torch of Turbo Lax, the city’s legendary punk band form the 1990s.
In many ways, it’s an example of what Russian punk should be – Russian lyrics, homegrown choruses and rhythms that address Russian issues. My personal favorite is “Crosses,” but it’s also hard to ignore the cover of Extreme Noise Terror’s “Predetermined” with Turboserj Turbo Lax. Other songs like “xx37” and “Subcultures” are potential anthems, calling on punks to be conscious of who they are in an isolated city, with biting gang vocals and lyrics.
The sound is of professional quality—these guys know what they’re doing, and they’re doing it well. I recommend picking this up if you can, just look out for the giant cow on the front cover!" Alex Herbert
